Naseem Shah is a young fast bowler who plays for Pakistan, and he got himself into very big trouble just because of one social media post. He posted something on X, which used to be called Twitter, about Maryam Nawaz, who is the daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and also niece of the current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In his post, he asked why she was being treated like a queen at Lord’s during the PSL opening ceremony. The problem was that this happened at a time when Pakistan was going through a big regional crisis, and the PCB had actually banned fans from coming to matches to save fuel. But then Maryam Nawaz came to the stadium with a big security convoy and many cars, and Naseem saw this, and he got angry and posted that question.
When Naseem realized what he had done, he deleted the post very quickly within minutes. Then his account put another post saying that he had been hacked, and now the account is recovered. But screenshots had already gone everywhere on the internet like fire. People were sharing it on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, and everyone was talking about it. The PCB did not believe his hacked story at all, and they rejected that explanation completely. So they issued him a show-cause notice on March 27, right after Maryam visited the stadium as the chief guest for the PSL opener.
The PCB made a disciplinary committee to look into this matter properly. This committee had three members, and they held a hearing on March 30. After reviewing everything, they decided that Naseem should be banned from cricket for two whole years. That would have been a disaster for him because he is only 23 years old, and he has played 20 Tests, 34 ODIs, and 37 T20Is for Pakistan. Two years is a very long time for any cricketer, especially when you are in your prime age.
🚨 FORMER PAK CRICKETER DEFENDS MONETARY FINE ON NASEEM SHAH

"Naseem Shah should thank his stars, he got away with fine. PCB was ready to ban him for at least 2 years but fortunately Mohsin Naqvi didn't allow that."

This is where PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi came and saved everything. According to former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali, who spoke on ARY News, Naqvi told the committee not to impose any ban on Naseem. Basit Ali said that Naqvi told them just to fine him money because he has a future, and you should not play with someone’s career like that. Basit also said that Naseem is very lucky, and the credit goes to Mohsin Naqvi for stopping the two-year ban. He said the chairman refused and said, “No, don’t impose a ban; just fine him.”
Even though Naseem gave an unconditional apology and said sorry for what he did, the PCB still punished him with a fine of PKR 2 crore, which is about USD 72,000. According to reports, this is the largest fine ever imposed on any cricketer in Pakistan’s cricket history. In Australian money, it is around AU$105,000. The PCB said in their official statement that after reviewing everything, Naseem was found to have breached various clauses of his central contract, and that is why this fine was imposed. They also said they remain committed to upholding professional standards and the integrity of the game.
Amid this uncertainty, recent on-field performances have served as a reminder of cricket’s ability to shift narratives through sheer excellence. Jacob Bethell’s Ashes heroics in Sydney, which played a crucial role in England’s fightback, showcased how individual brilliance can momentarily rise above off-field tensions and refocus attention on the game itself.

After all this happened, Naseem finally spoke up and posted a statement on his X account. He said that the recent post from his account was actually made by his management team, and it did not reflect his own views. But he said he takes full responsibility for his platform, and he has made necessary changes to make sure this does not happen again. He also apologized sincerely to everyone affected by this misuse of his platform. So basically, he fired his social media adviser and took the blame for everything.
The PCB also did something very interesting. They found out that Naseem had a social media adviser who was helping him with posts. That adviser was terminated by Naseem himself after this whole incident. But the PCB went one step further and said this adviser will be blacklisted from associating with any player that comes under the PCB’s jurisdiction. That means this person can never work with any Pakistani cricketer again in his life.
To understand why this post became such a big deal, you need to know the background. Before the PSL started, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi himself had announced that the tournament would be played without any spectators because Pakistan needed to conserve fuel during the ongoing West Asia crisis. But then, when the opening match happened, many high-profile people still came to the stadium. Maryam Nawaz arrived at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore with a huge security entourage of many cars, and she met players and interacted with everyone. That is why Naseem posted his question because he thought it was unfair.
Basit Ali also said something very important during his talk on ARY News. He said that when players sign their central contracts, all the rules and clauses are clearly written there, but players just send their managers to handle everything. He asked why they do not read these things themselves. He said if players read the contracts personally, they would know what they cannot post on social media. He said a mistake was made, whether by the manager or by Naseem himself, but otherwise there would have been a two-year ban, and two years is a very long time.
Naseem Shah was the most expensive player at this year’s PSL auction, and he was signed by Rawalpindi Pindiz for PKR 86.50 million, which is about AU $452,000. So he can afford this 2 crore PKR fine, but still, it is a lot of money. More importantly, this whole thing must have taught him a big lesson about being careful on social media. One post almost ruined his career, and if Mohsin Naqvi had not stepped in, he would be sitting at home for two years without playing any cricket.
This whole story shows that cricketers need to be very careful about what they post online, especially when they have central contracts with the PCB. The rules are very clear about not posting political or critical things. Naseem was lucky that Mohsin Naqvi saved him from a two-year ban, but he still had to pay the biggest fine in Pakistan cricket history. His social media adviser lost his job and got blacklisted. So next time you see a cricketer posting something controversial, just remember that one click can change everything.
