Sarfaraz played 54 Test matches, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is for Pakistan. That is so many matches! He scored 6,164 runs in total with six centuries. And as a wicketkeeper, he took 315 catches and did 56 stumpings. That is a lot of catches! His glove work was really amazing.

The Best Captain Ever for Pakistan?

You know what? Sarfaraz was the captain in 100 matches for Pakistan. That includes 13 Tests, 50 ODIs, and 37 T20Is. He is the only captain who won ICC trophies for Pakistan when he was junior and also when he was senior. First, he won the Under-19 World Cup in 2006, beating India in the final. Then he won the big one!

In 2017, he did something magical. Pakistan was the lowest-ranked team in the Champions Trophy, but Sarfaraz said, “We can do it!” And guess what? They DID IT! They beat India in the final by 180 runs. Oh, that day was so good! 

Fakhar Zaman scored a hundred, and their bowlers destroyed India’s batting order. Sarfaraz became the first Pakistan captain after Imran Khan to win a 50-over ICC title. So cool, right?

He Made Pakistan Number 1 in T20s!

Under Sarfaraz’s captaincy, Pakistan became the best T20 team in the world. They were number 1 for more than one year! His team won 11 T20 series in a row. That is a world record! They beat the West Indies, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Scotland. They even whitewashed some teams, which means winning all matches. Sarfaraz was a smart captain. He always encouraged young players.

He gave a chance to players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Hasan Ali. Now they are all big stars! Shaheen bowls so fast, and Babar scores so many runs. Sarfaraz always trusted them and backed them. That is why they became match-winners. He always said he wanted to play fearless cricket and have a united team.

Some Sad Times Too

But not everything was happy for Sarfaraz. After 2019, he lost his form with the bat. He was scoring fewer runs, and people started criticizing him. Then he was removed as captain from all formats. That was so sad! He was also dropped from the team for more than one year. I felt very bad for him.

He also had a problem in South Africa when he said something bad to a player, Andile Phehlukwayo, and got suspended for four matches. That was not good. But everyone makes mistakes. He learned from it.

His Last Great Moment

Even when everyone thought Sarfaraz was finished, he came back and did something amazing! In 2022 against New Zealand in Karachi, his home city, he scored 86, 53, 78, and 118 runs in four innings. The 118 was in the last test when Pakistan was trying to chase a big target. They could not win because of the bad light, but Sarfaraz showed he still had the fire! That hundred was so emotional. His family was crying in the stadium.

His last match for Pakistan was against Australia in Perth in December 2023. He played his heart out but then said goodbye to international cricket.

His Records and Awards

Sarfaraz got the Pride of Performance award in 2018 from the government. He was the youngest Pakistan captain to get this award. He also holds the Pakistan record for most catches in a Test match, 10 catches against South Africa in 2019. And he is the only Pakistan wicketkeeper to score an ODI hundred at Lord’s, against England in 2016. Lord’s is like the home of cricket! Very special place.

In the 2015 World Cup, he took 6 catches in one match against South Africa and equaled the world record. He also scored a century against Ireland in that World Cup. His 96 runs against Sri Lanka in 2015 were also very famous. He almost got a hundred but got out on 96. Still a very good innings.

What He Said After Retiring

Now Sarfaraz has joined the selection panel for the Pakistan men’s side. He is also going to be the head coach of the Pakistan Test team, maybe. He will start with the series against Bangladesh in May 2026. He already worked with the Under-19 team as a mentor, and they won the Asia Cup. So he is good at teaching young players. That is nice because he can help future cricketers.

He also played for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL for eight years and won the title in 2019. He was their captain and very popular. Quetta fans love him so much. They always chanted his name.

What Next for Sarfaraz?

Sarfaraz was not the most stylish batsman, but he was a fighter. He never gave up. When the team was in trouble, he would come and score runs. His keeping was also top-class. So many catches and stumpings. And as captain, he was aggressive and always encouraged players. He would clap from behind the stumps and say “shabash!”

He also had a funny side. Remember when he was sleeping, and the team pranked him? Or when he did those funny interviews? He was always smiling. That is why fans loved him. He was like a normal guy who worked hard and achieved big things.
