Wow, guys, this is the biggest news ever in cricket. The Rajasthan Royals team just got sold to some rich Americans for a mind-blowing $1.635 billion. Do you even know how many zeros that is? It’s like 15,290 crore rupees, which is more than all the chocolates in the world combined, I think.
The people who bought the team is a big group from America. Their leader is a guy named Kal Somani, who is from Arizona and does tech stuff. He was already having some small part in the team before. But now he has decided to buy everything with his rich friends.
So Kal Somani brought some super-rich friends with him. One of them is Rob Walton. You know Walmart, right? The big shopping place. His family started Walmart, so he has, like, unlimited money basically. He also owns the Denver Broncos team in American football.
Another rich family is the Hamps. They own the Detroit Lions football team. The mom is called Sheila Ford Hamp, and her family is connected to the Ford car company. So yeah, they are loaded too.
All these guys also own a golf team together in Detroit. That golf league is made by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who are like the best golfers ever.
Okay, so let me tell you something crazy. Back in 2008, when the IPL first started, the Rajasthan Royals were bought for only $67 million. That was the cheapest team back then. And now the same team is sold for $1.635 billion. Do you know how much more that is? It’s like 57 times more in rupees.
In 2008, one dollar was 40 rupees, but now it’s 94 rupees, so the money has gotten even bigger. The team value grew so much because IPL is now super famous all over the world.
The bidding happened on March 20. There were many rich people who wanted to buy the team. Some of them were Avran Glazer, who owns the Manchester United team in England. Also, the Times of India group and the Aditya Birla group wanted to buy.
But guess what? The Times group and Aditya Birla Group joined together and bought the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team instead for $1.78 billion. So both teams got sold on the same day for huge money. How cool is that?

A US-based consortium led by entrepreneur Kal Somani has reportedly acquired 100% ownership of RR for around ₹15,000–15,300 crore. 🤯

When Kal Somani buys the Rajasthan Royals, he also gets all the other Royals teams in the world. That means Paarl Royals in South Africa’s SA20 league and Barbados Royals in the Caribbean league. So basically, he gets the whole Royals family.
Amid this uncertainty, recent on-field performances have served as a reminder of cricket’s ability to shift narratives through sheer excellence. Jacob Bethell’s Ashes heroics in Sydney, which played a crucial role in England’s fightback, showcased how individual brilliance can momentarily rise above off-field tensions and refocus attention on the game itself.

The old main owner was a British guy called Manoj Badale. He bought into the team in 2008 and slowly got more and more stake. By 2021, he had 65% of the team. Now he is selling everything to these American guys.
Some other famous people who had small parts in the team were Shilpa Shetty, the actress, and her husband, Raj Kundra. Also, there was Lachlan Murdoch, whose dad owns Fox News and RedBird Capital Company.
Good news for fans. This deal will not mess up the IPL 2026 season. The team will still play their first three matches in Guwahati, which is like their second home. Their first match is on March 30 against the Chennai Super Kings. Riyan Parag is the new captain now.
Now the deal needs to be approved by the BCCI. That is the cricket board in India. Once they say yes, then everything is final. The new owners will take over after this IPL season finishes.
Did you know that Shane Warne, the great Australian spinner who died, had 3% stake in the team? He asked for that in 2008 when he was captain. Now his family will get $4.6 million dollars from this sale. That’s so nice that he trusted the team from the start.
The Rajasthan Royals were the first IPL champions in 2008. Shane Warne was the captain, and nobody thought they would win, but they did. It was like a fairy tale.
This is like the biggest thing in IPL history, I think. The team that was the cheapest in 2008 is now sold for so much money. It shows that if you believe in something and work hard, it can become really big. The Americans saw that IPL is awesome, and they wanted to be part of it.
I’m so excited to see what happens next. Will the team get even better players now? Will they build a super stadium? Who knows. But one thing is sure. The Rajasthan Royals are now in big American hands, and they have a lot of money to spend.
