We now know the full extent of the bowling team’s problems in the World Cup. Every lover is devastated after a heartbreaking match because their team is nearly eliminated from the competition. One player from the other team, Pathum Nissanka, scored a truly beautiful 100 and completely destroyed the Australian bowling for them to win in order to stay alive. Australia’s World Cup ambition is now fully realized.
Yes, Australia is officially out of the T20 World Cup 2026. After their big loss to Sri Lanka, the team was waiting and hoping for other results to go their way. But it was not meant to be. The final bad news came when the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland got washed out due to rain . Because of the rain, both teams shared one point each. That single point was enough for Zimbabwe to go to the next round and it pushed Australia out of the tournament for good .
So even though Australia has one match left to play against Oman, it does not matter anymore. They cannot qualify for the Super 8s now. It is a very sad end for the team who everyone thought would do so well.
The environment was incredible as the game took place in a sizable venue in Kandy. The winning team, Australia, does bowl first, according to their captain. They believed they could put pressure on the opposing team by scoring earlier wickets. However, Pathum Nissanka opened the bowling and had other ideas. From the beginning, he began playing photos. He had no fear at all about the rapid bowlers. He was repeatedly hitting the ball to the limit. He appeared to be playing a video game in simple mode.
Nissanka’s bowling was simply sublime. That means it was very very good and perfect to enjoy. Every photo he played went straight from the middle of the wicket. He was cutting and pulling and driving. The Australian batsmen were trying anything. They bowled quickly, they bowled slow, they tried to bowl at his brain, but nothing was working. He was just too great on the day. He found cracks in the field so quickly. Even the best catchers in the world, they were only chasing the ball like headless hens. It was not a great look for the Asian fans in the stadium. They were all sitting quite quietly and looking extremely worried.
He scored his century, which is 100 runs off just 52 balls, and the crowd went absolutely wild . They was clapping and cheering for him because they was seeing a very special innings. By the time his innings was finished, he had made a huge score and he was still not out. He stayed there till the end which is why they call it a sublime ton. Because of his amazing batting, Sri Lanka chased down the target in just 18 overs and won the match by 8 wickets .
Now when Australia came out to bat first, they needed to score runs very fast. In the start, it was looking good for them. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh was hitting the ball very hard and they made 104 runs together . But then everything went wrong. After Head got out, the middle order just collapsed. They was playing bad shots and getting caught out. They looked very nervous at the crease. They was not moving their feet properly and they was just wafting their bats at the ball.
One player got out for a duck, which is zero, and another player also got out for not many runs. The whole batting line-up just collapsed like a house of cards. There was no partnerships. Nobody stayed at the wicket for a long time. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They was all out for just 181 runs, which was not enough on that pitch .
The Australian team made some big mistakes. First, they left out Steve Smith from the playing eleven even though he had just joined the squad . Many people think they could have used his experience in the middle order. Second, the bowlers had no plan for Nissanka. They kept bowling to his strengths and he kept hitting them to the boundary.
Also, the middle order batting was very poor. After the openers got out, nobody could handle the pressure. Cameron Green played a very bad shot to get out and Tim David also did not last long . In big matches like this, your best players have to perform, but on this day, only the openers showed up.
Here is how the final standings looked in Group B after all the matches:
POS | TEAM | PLAYED | WON | LOST | N/R | POINTS | NET RR | STATUS |
Q1 | Sri Lanka | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 6 | +2.462 | Qualified |
Q2 | Zimbabwe | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 5 | +1.984 | Qualified |
3 | Ireland | 4 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 3 | +0.150 | Eliminated |
4 | Australia | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | +0.414 | Eliminated |
5 | Oman | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | -4.546 | Eliminated |
As you can see, Sri Lanka topped the party by winning all their activities. Zimbabwe finished subsequent with 5 points after their suit against Ireland was washed away. Australia ended with just 2 factors from three games. Even though they have a better online work frequency than Ireland, they have played one match less, so they cannot get up to Zimbabwe’s 5 factors.
This reduction means that Australia’s World Cup is now finished. It is a very unfortunate situation for them because all expected them to do so well. But in cricket, you don’t take any team softly. One participant, like Nissanka, can simply change the entire game on its head. He was the hero of the match, and he broke the hearts of every Australian supporter.
There is nothing left to do for Australian fans right now other than to wait for the following competition. They will have to consider what went wrong when they return home. Many young players will take lessons from this, but this loss will be devastating for the top players. The warriors ‘home-maker will bear the name of Pathum Nissanka in their minds.
