India qualified for the T20 WC 2026 semi-final after defeating West Indies in a must-win match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
West Indies posted 195/4, with strong contributions from Rovman Powell and Jason Holder, while Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy picked crucial wickets for India.
Sanju Samson led India’s chase brilliantly, scoring an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls, including 12 fours and 4 sixes.
Key partnerships with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma helped India recover after early wickets and stay on track during the high-pressure chase.
India chased 199/5 in 19.2 overs, winning with 4 balls to spare and booking a thrilling semi-final clash against England in Mumbai.
India played a super-duper significant match against the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday. If they lost, they would have to go home. But they didn’t drop! They won! And it was all because of some wonderful batting and bowling. The stadium at Eden Gardens was full of people in blue jerseys, cheering so loud my hearing would hurt( in a good way!).
India batted second. They are the defending champions, so we knew they were strong. The West Indies scored a lot of runs, 195/4 in their 20 overs. That’s a pile of work! We were all a little afraid, I’m hardly gonna lie. The ball was looking actually good for batting, like a smooth road.
When the West Indies started batting, they were being very careful. They didn’t try to hit every ball for a six. At the start, in the power play, they only got 45 runs, and no one got out. Two new guys, Shai Hope and Roston Chase, were opening. Chase was opening for the first time in a T20! He hit some really pretty boundaries against our bowlers, Arshdeep and even Bumrah!
Next came the spin, Varun Chakaravarthy. He is difficult! In the eighth over, he bowled a ball that knocked Shai Hope’s stumps again. He got 32 runs. But the true hero was Jasprit Bumrah. He is the best bowler in the world, I think. He took two innings in two balls! First, he got Hetmyer away. Hetmyer was hitting great innings, but he tried to strike Bumrah, and the ball went to the bowler. Finally, the very next ball, he got Chase to strike it in the heat, and Suryakumar Yadav, who is a magic catcher, caught it while jumping! India was so happy!
The West Indies was in trouble after that. A batsman was also taken by Hardik Pandya. From 102/ 2 to 119/ 4 changed. Finally, a significant issue appeared. Rovman Powell and Jason Holder immediately struck all. Powell became the first West Indian player to score 150 runs in a T20I match! That’s more than my time, six, really! In just 35 balls, they combined for 76 more runs. Holder quickly added a 37 while Powell made 34. Because of them, the West Indies received a 195+ report.
Now it was India’s turn to bird. We needed 196 runs to win. That’s a lot of work. But our opening, Sanju Samson, was hardly scared one bit. In the next over itself, he hit a four! He got 17 runs in that one over from Akeal Hosein. He was sending a message, “We are here to win”!
But in the same over, Abhishek Sharma got out. He tried to pull a ball, and Hetmyer ran a long way to get it. Then Ishan Kishan even got out with the same approach to Jason Holder. After the powerplay, India was 53/2. We needed a great partnership.
Sanju Samson was also present, and he had a heroic attitude. By punching the ball for four, he reached his second T20 World Cup fifty. It was amazing! He collaborated with Suryakumar Yadav for 58 runs before partnering with Tilak Varma for 42. Sanju was one of the few people who didn’t take very many crazy risks. He was bridging the gaps and pushing boundaries. He was picking his best moments to attack while playing a specific inning.
In the end, India needed just a few runs to win. And suppose who hit the winning runs? Sanju Samson, of course! He chipped the puck over the catcher in the middle, and it went for a four. India won with 4 balls to spare! They made 199/5 in 19.2 innings. Everyone in the venue was shouting and hugging.
Sanju Samson finished with 97 runs, never away! He simply faced 50 balls and struck 12 fours and 4 sixes. It was the highest rating by any Indian player while chasing in the whole T20 World Cup record! He is a real sun.
Amid this uncertainty, recent on-field performances have served as a reminder of cricket’s ability to shift narratives through sheer excellence. Jacob Bethell’s Ashes heroics in Sydney, which played a crucial role in England’s fightback, showcased how individual brilliance can momentarily rise above off-field tensions and refocus attention on the game itself.

So India reached the semi-finals as a result of this victory! They make up the top four groups. It’s a really great deal. On Thursday, they will play against England in Mumbai. That suit will be even more thrilling. I hope Sanju achieves 100 the next time! Bring India with you!
