The Indian Premier League( IPL) is the largest cricket party in the world right now, and off-field events are already very exciting! Bigshots are chasing to own big teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals( RR). They are the oldest teams to acquire new owners. It’s similar to buying a brand-new video activity character or a brand-new costume, but this is actually expensive! In plain English, let me tell you everything.

The Final Race to Buy RCB

So, the people who own RCB, a big company called Diageo’s United Spirits, want to sell the team. They are like, “Who wants to buy our super cool team?” And many rich people and companies put up their hands! But now, the sale is in its final stage, which means the race is almost over.

My dad told me that only two people or groups are left in the race now. One is a big company from a country called Sweden, and its name is EQT. They are super rich, and they want RCB very badly. The other group is like a team-up of three super-powerful friends! It includes a very smart man named Ranjan Pai from Manipal Hospitals, and two big American and Singapore companies called KKR and Temasek. They are all friends, and they want to buy RCB together.

Why is RCB So Costly?

You won’t believe the price they are talking about! It is around $2 billion dollars. That is so much money, you cannot even count it! Do you know how much money that is? It is like buying a million ice-creams for your whole school, every day, for your whole life! 

Earlier, some other people also wanted to buy the team. There was a family called the Glazers, who also own a famous football team called Manchester United. They said they will give $1.8 billion, which is also a lot, but they are not in the race anymore. Another rich man, Adar Poonawalla, who makes the vaccines, also said no thank you. So now only two are left, and everyone thinks the final price will be close to $2 billion.

What Happens Next for RCB?

Now that the two groups have given their final papers, the people who are selling RCB will look at both offers very carefully. This is called the “exclusivity phase.” It will take a long time, maybe 45 to 90 days. 

After they pick who the new owner will be, they have to tell the BCCI, which is the main boss of cricket in India, because they have to say yes to them. The old owners want to finish everything by March 31, but the new owner will probably only come and sit in the owner’s chair by September or October. I hope the new owner buys good players for RCB!

Rajasthan Royals Also Getting Sold!

It’s not just RCB; another team, called Rajasthan Royals (RR), is also getting a new family. Many people want to buy them too! At least three groups have given their final offers for RR. The people who own RR now, a man named Manoj Badale and his company, have 65% of the team. Some other people, like RedBird Capital and Lachlan Murdoch, also have some small parts of the team.

I heard that the Aditya Birla Group, which is a very big company in India that makes lots of things, is one of the people who wants to buy RR the most. They have teamed up with an American businessman named David Blitzer. Another big media company from India, maybe the Times Group, is also trying to buy them. It is like a race to see who can get the pink team!

RR is also very costly, but a little less than RCB. People are giving offers between $1.1 billion and $1.35 billion dollars. That is still a crazy big number! A long time ago, in 2021, a new team called Lucknow Super Giants was bought for only $850 million. So you see, teams are getting more and more expensive because everyone loves watching IPL.

The people who are helping with the RR sale are from a special company called the Raine Group. They are very famous because they also helped sell big football teams like Chelsea and Manchester United. They know how to do this stuff.

When Will RR Get a New Owner?

Unlike RCB, the RR people are not in a super hurry. They don’t have a fixed date like March 31 to finish the deal. They are happy with the offers they got, so they will take their time and decide who is the best new owner for the team. They will probably sell the team in the next few months. For a team that sometimes has trouble getting fans in their home city, a price of $1.3 billion is really, really good for them.
